Painterly vol. 1 - Pattern Collection

Painterly vol 1 is a collection of patterns made up of hand-painted marks and shapes. Different brushes, paints, and techniques were used throughout the collection. Created to bring to life the beautiful energy that comes from something handmade.

How it started:

It all started with a daily (well…I definitely skipped a few days, so more like weekly) art practice. Just like how you have to continue to lift weights to strengthen your muscles, you have to continuously create to strengthen your design muscles. Easier said than done though. I would make some time in my day, gather my supplies, sit down in front of a piece of paper, and…nothing. No idea of what to draw or how to begin. It was frustrating and a little disheartening. So I came up with an idea. Each time I sat down to create, I would just make marks. No pressure to create the next Mona Lisa. Just fun little playful motifs created from whatever my weapon of choice that day was, sometimes a paintbrush other times a pen or pencil. Some days nothing special showed up on the page, but other days….little paint blobs that made my minimalist heart happy.

My process:

Each pattern in this collection began as an individual shape or mark. Created from a combination of physical and digital drawings. I then scanned, photographed, or exported my markings onto my MacBook, to be brought into Adobe Illustrator. I LOVE Adobe Illustrator. In terms of my creation process, it is the Dr. Jekyll to my Mr. Hyde. I vectorize most if not all of my art. Which, is just a nerdy way of saying I turn it into a shape that can be scaled as large or as small as I want without losing any clarity. Nobody wants a perfect pattern that turns out looking fuzzy when it’s blown up and printed. Once everything is vectorized, I create my patterns. They are all formatted to repeat perfectly in every direction.

Colors:

Color choices have always been a double-edged sword for me. I adore all things monochrome, so that’s how I design. Shades of black, white, grey, and beige is my color palette of choice…for everything! From shopping for a new shirt to picking out a couch, you can catch me deciding between shades of black. However, it’s not all about me, hence the double-edged sword. I design for the humans of the world who just straight up feel good when they interact with the organic feel of hand-drawn shapes paired with the oddly satisfying repetition of patterns. And sometimes, those humans like a little color. So I played around with some happy, yet still organic feeling, colors. If you’re one of those color-loving minimalists….it’s for you that I’m stepping a toe outside of my beloved black-and-white bubble.

Where I see these patterns existing in the world:

I did not have a specific industry in mind for licensing my art when designing this collection. As I shared before, it began just as a way to create and flex my art practice biceps. However, I would love to see them on outdoor or sports gear. These painterly patterns were born out of the continuous practice of activity and motions. It would be such a powerful moment for them to return to motion in a different way. Anywhere from surfboards, to gloves, to sneakers. In a contrasting yet totally effortless industry, they could return to the practice of creation. A series of notebooks or other stationery would be beautiful! These patterns were created to allow me to practice my own creation process….how cool would it be if they became the cover of a sketchbook that sparked someone else’s creative practice!? If that happens, I would probably immediately break out into singing The Circle of Life. No videos though, you’ll just have to take my word that I did it.

Want to license a pattern from this collection?

If you are a business owner, product creator, or brand and want to license one or several patterns from this collection, you can contact me at rosa@rosavdesign.com

If you’re not totally sure what art licensing is or if it’s right for you..here’s the high-speed breakdown. Do you have a product that needs art or a brand that needs a little something special to make it stand out? If you see a pattern that you adore and that your community of customers would fall in love with as well, you essentially borrow it from me to print it on your product or use it within your brand. This could be printed on products and packaging, or used across web and social. The possibilities are endless, and I’m always open to formatting the artwork to be used in a new creative way!

Want to be the first to know about any new art or pattern collections? You can join the studio insiders list. You’ll only get emails when I have a new collection or piece of art that I’m excited to share with you.
